My Family

Some people believe carnelians invoke laughter & warmth, they’ll open the heart to abundant joy, which is what really makes one happy (instead of success). Joy = family & friends & sunshine. Necklace ‘My family’ Material oystershell, silver, carnelians

‘Why then the world’s mine oyster Which I with sword will open’ – William Shakespeare.

Nil Volentibus Arduum – Happy B’day!

A sweet teenage friend – one of the family to us – turns 18 today and her mother asked me to create a ring which reads: Nil volentibus arduum meaning ‘Nothing is impossible to the brave’. Her father who passed away not so long ago, was valiant, and so the ring comes in a certain Viking roughness. Material 18 ct yellow gold, white gold setting, diamond

Broken family

It must be a midlife thing, divorced people in their fifties. In this case I was asked to use half of a wedding band for a jewel for 2 daughters. I kept it simple by sawing the golden part in half and added 2 matt silver rings. The emotional part: the first letters of the first names of both parents and both daughters are hided at the inside.

Gold diamond

For my advanced goldsmith exam I’d to make a traditional engagement ring. Since I did not have a big stone, I’ve made a hand-faceted one out of a nugget. The little gold balls keep the ring upright, a trick I’ve learned from Philip Sajet:

“A piece should give an answer to an unasked question, otherwise people just walk away. I aim for essential and meaningful jewellery. Design has a primary goal, but art is meant to offer something else. Life has a signification. I never wonder if a piece is going to be successful. I now believe in the necessity of a piece, and not being slavelike to design. I respect my public, but I can’t care about their desires and needs. I do about 40 pieces a year: the pieces I want to make. It is enough to live comfortably and keep working. You need to start from your inner self, then take some distance and get higher.”

Ring turned inside out

I loved my ‘kleine oma’ (little grandma). My mother gave me her wedding ring (reading J.d.K.) to melt and create something new. But I loved this memory of my grandparents, and decided to turn this 14k ring inside out. The outside is sandpapered, the inside high gloss. And I gave it back.
