Cheap and precious

Most of the time it takes me days-to-weeks to make a special piece of jewelry. This is a ‘quick & dirty’ attempt to create cheap jewelry with real 18k gold, nice light grey pearls and blackened silver.

Objects of personal adornment define a person’s social status and serve as a redeemable investment – Nikki Couppee

Beautiful presentation of jewelry which votes preciousness, while all is made out of cheap materials (metal, plexiglass, bubblegum, nail polish, you name it). “From the beginning of culture, the intrinsic value of the materials used in jewelry making has always been a reflection of an individual’s or family’s wealth. Even today only the social elite have the chance to wear extravagant expensive jewelry. I create stand-ins for the real thing.” Jewelry Nikki Couppee

Plastic ocean – Thirza Schaap

I love the debris at the shore and am still figuring out how to translate that into jewelry, like bunches of silver chains with pieces of seaweed made out of wood and tiny pearls…so this is pure inspiration. The engaged photographer lives in South Africa where 80% of the food comes from the ocean. She is spreading awareness of the plastics-in-ocean-problem, by showing posters of sea-worn trash in the buses over there. Photography Thirza Schaap

Happy choker Lies

When I make presents for friends I often just grap all materials around me and make something out of it. This time I’d just visited a stone setter who milled the square emeralds inside the pearls.
